Offerings with an academic emphasis that develop and enrich Vashon’s self-awareness, knowledge, and effectiveness … such as:

Vashon 101: A Journey Just Begun – A multidisciplinary survey of Vashon covering geology, ecology, human history, folklore, and social science approaches to such areas as Vashon’s demographics, community engagement, and connection to the outside world.  This course was offered both Fall 2006 and Spring 2007.  It will be offered again for Fall 2007 and annually during Fall semesters after that. Artful Vashon – An exploration of creativity and artful expression in the arts and daily life on Vashon.  This class is planned to debut for Spring semester 2008.

Vashon 101 Alumni Lecture Series – An eclectic mix of events to showcase both local and outside experts speaking on topics of community interest.  During the first part of 2007, two lectures on Global Warming were presented; the first covering the science of climate change, and the second facilitating personal and community action steps to reduce greenhouse gases.  The lecture series is shepherded by a steering committee of former students from Vashon 101, and it is intended to extend the learning and spirit of engagement engendered by Vashon 101.  These lectures are open to both College Alumni and the general public.

Vashon Reads and Leads – A community outreach project to involve year-round and summer residents in reading and discussing the books from a short reading list of thought provoking titles during Summer 2007.

Other –  Classes are planned that follow up on Vashon 101 sessions or other topics that address Vashon activities or impact the island.  Examples are: Interdisciplinary field study at selected sites of geologic and ecological importance; Oral History research and methods; Study of Native American presence on Vashon-Maury Island and the South Sound; Governance structures, taxation, and community engagement on Vashon; Advanced study of Vashon Demographics and their projections; Perspectives on Global Warming and Climate Change.
