Kevin J. Freeman, M.S., Geology, (Michigan State University, 1974). Senior Vice President, Managing Director ENTRIX, Inc., an environmental and natural resource management consulting company headquartered in Houston, TX. Kevin is a licensed geologist, engineering geologist, and hydrogeologist in Washington State, and a registered geologist and engineering geologist in Oregon. In his 33-year professional career, Kevin has conducted oil and gas exploration, pipeline siting and engineering studies, fault and seismicity hazard investigations, contaminated soil remediation and cleanup, landslide and slope stability hazard assessments, hydrogeological investigations, environmental impact analysis, and earthen dam design services. Course: Vashon 101 (The Geology, Water Resources, and Geologic Hazards of Vashon Island) Tom DeVries, Ph.D, Geology, (Ohio State University, 1986). Tom teaches a variety of science courses at Vashon High School, including freshman Physical Science, Environmental Science, Marine Science, and Molecular Evolution; and a UW course in Geology. He is an Adjunct Research Associate at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Tom maintains an active research program in invertebrate paleontology in Peru, where he has completed 20 field seasons, including five months in 1999 as a Fulbright Scholar. Bruce Haulman, Ph.D, History, (University of Washington, 1994). Professor of History at Green River Community College. Bruce is an islander affiliated with the Vashon Heritage Society and the Burke Museum, and is currently writing a comprehensive book on the history of Vashon. Courses: Vashon 101 (Human History on the Island: Part 1: Native Vashon and Early Settlement, and Part 2: Separate Villages to Island Community); Introduction to Taking Oral and Video Histories. Christine Ingebritsen, Ph.D, International Relations, (Cornell, University, 1993). Associate Professor in Scandinavian Studies, and acting Dean of Undergraduate Education, University of Washington. Christine’s research focuses on the relationships of small states with larger global issues. Her particular areas of interest include the environment, human rights, and security. Course: Vashon 101 (Vashon and the World: A look at the complex economic, political, and social forces that flow between Vashon and the off-island world) Patrick Christie, Ph.D, Natural Resources and the Environment, (University of Michigan, 1999). Associate Professor School of Marine Affairs and the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. Patrick’s interests include the social feasibility of ecosystem-based management and marine-protected areas, integrated coastal management, participatory research, and qualitative research methods. Course: Vashon 101 (Environmental Sociology – Defining Environmentalism on the Islands: Growth and The Case of Glacier NW) William Seaburg, Ph.D, Anthropology (University of Washington, 1994). Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, University of Washington, Bothell. Bill is a folklorist who relates the principles of folklore to the island stories heard from voices of the past. Course: Vashon 101 (Myths and Worldview) Alice Larson, Ph.D, Social Welfare Research, University of Washington, 1982. Alice also has advanced training in statistics from the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. She currently works on the Island as a private consultant. Course: Vashon 101 (Just the Facts—Island Demographics) Ronald Irvine, PT Faculty, Culinary Arts & Wine Technology South Seattle Community College, and numerous other credentials attesting to his wine expertise. Ron is a long time Vashon Island resident and owns Vashon Winery which produces mostly red and white wines from Bordeaux varieties. Vashon Winery also produces wines from Puget Sound grapes and makes a limited amount of cider. Ron has a delightful sense of humor and apropos an owner of a small business, he describes himself as a winemaker, bookkeeper, and janitor. Course: Wine A-Z Appreciation Class Joseph W. Meeker is a human ecologist with a Ph.D. in comparative literature, and a Master's in postdoctoral studies in wildlife ecology and comparative animal and human behavior. He has been a ranger in the National Park Service. He produced and hosted the radio series "Minding the Earth," carried on many National Public Radio stations during the 1980s. He has taught in several universities, and is currently an Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of the Union Institute and University. He is especially interested in the evolution of human and animal play behavior. His books include Spheres of Life, The Comedy of Survival, and Minding the Earth. Courses: Vashon 101 (Stories, Place, and Identity); Introduction to Taking Oral and Video Histories; Artful Vashon Jane Howard, M.Ed. (Western Washington University,1989). Jane has traveled extensively and is an artist, parent, adventurer and educator. Course: Vashon 101 (That Unique Vashon Character) Allen DeSteiguer Course: Vashon 101 (A Passion for Community) Nancy Raume Carr is an educator with a Masters Degree in Special Education. She has 36 years of experience as a consultant/trainer and is an Adjunct Professor for Seattle Pacific University. She has conducted a variety of workshops nationally, in the drug/alcohol and health education field, ranging from prevention to intervention, high-risk youth, parent education, and social skills training. For four years, Nancy was the drug/alcohol consultant/trainer for Educational Service District 121, serving forty-five percent of the schools in the State of Washington. Nancy also teaches "Discipline with Love and Logic" to teachers and parents. Her sense of humor and personal experience add an additional dimension to her highly motivating, open, and relaxed presentations. Course: Vashon 101 (Orientation Session) John Olsen has been involved for more than thirty years in the development of waterjet technology. In 1993, he founded the OMAX Corporation, which has become the leading developer and manufacturer of easy-to-use machine tools based on the abrasive waterjet cutting process. Dr. Olsen is now the Vice President of Operations for the OMAX Corporation in Kent, WA. He has been instrumental in Vashon College’s acquisition of its own OMAX machine. Course: OMAX 55100 Precision Cutting Frank Foster helped pioneer digital filmmaking while still a student at The Evergreen State College. His first computer film “Phosphenes” (1973) was selected to represent the United States at the World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. His corporate experience in Los Angeles has included positions at Atari Corp, and Lasermedia, and as a founder of Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he was a Senior Vice President for over eight years. Frank has worked on numerous feature films, directing and producing two of them: The Story of Computer Graphics (1999) and Thru the Moebius Strip (2005). In addition to directing Vashon College’s Center for Digital Communication, Frank is active in the production of computer animation in India, as well as the production of documentaries in high definition video format.
